Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms PDF Files

The Library of Congress is developing a new vocabulary, entitled Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT). To support use of the LCDGT, the Policy and Standards Division has published a draft Demographic Group Terms Manual, available in PDF form. The Manual consists of 35 instruction sheets that provide guidelines and instructions for assigning demographic group terms, proposing new ones, and proposing revisions to existing terms. These instruction sheets along with the new Demographic terms and an introduction on how to use them are listed on this web page.

In 2013 the Library of Congress began to explore the possibility of developing a controlled vocabulary specific to demographic groups. Terms in the vocabulary would be used to describe the characteristics of two types of entities: the intended audiences of resources and the creators and contributors to resources. This first edition of Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms contains the initial 827 authorized terms, which were approved in 2015. A brief history of the development of demographic group terms at the Library of Congress and a description of the characteristics and structure of LCDGT are also included in the Introduction.

Besides how to use them, instruction sheets in the Manual include how to propose new terms, changes, and more.

LCDGT is also available in other formats. For users desiring enhanced functionality, LCDGT will continue to be part of LC’s web-based subscription product, Classification Web. Authority records in MARC UTF-8 format may be freely downloaded from, and they are also available for download in a variety of formats from LC’s Linked Data Service,
