White Flour is a masterful retelling and poetic recounting of the Coup Clutz Clowns real-life, humor-filled action against a hate group's march (real-life event on May 26, 2007 when members of a white supremacist group came to Knoxville, Tennessee from out of state to hold a rally in a public park there).
White Flour is David LaMotte’s second children’s book, with illustrations by Jenn Hales. In Seussian rhyme, it tells the funny and inspiring story of the day that the Ku Klux Klan met the Coup Clutz Clowns, who offered a whimsical and wise retort to their racist rally. The poem that provides the text for the book was inspired by true events in Knoxville, TN in 2007, when local activists from Mountain Justice met hatred with humor—and won.
White Flour was written for middle school students and older, but may be appropriate for younger kids at their parents’ discretion.
It is a 36-page hard-cover book, printed in Canada on Forest Stewardship Council-certified recycled paper with 10% post-consumer content, and is also available in several eBook formats. The website has links to the complete text of the book, as well as video (complete with illustrations), and downloadable resources such as a Sunday School Curriculum (9 pages), Social Studies Lesson plan (9 pages), and Reading guide (7 pages).
